Red Admiral butterflies are common across all of the U.S. but I had not seen one since I was a child many years ago living in Illinois. This year one showed up in my garden and when it did I quickly grabbed my camera and ran outside to photograph it. The butterfly flitted around my zinnias but always chose a poor looking flower to sit on so I had to use a little creative license and chose to paint it on one of my purple coneflowers instead. The purple is a perfect compliment to the reddish orange stripes in the butterflies wings.
